One of the catchiest songs you’ll hear this year. Truth Hurts is about a woman saying everything other women wish they could say so clearly about some of the men they’ve tried to date.
Move aside Beyonce, Lizzo coming for ya!
Everything from the music to the melody is pleasing, even the interesting emphasis on syllables and the voice and pitch changes that come out randomly.
Intro
Why men great ’til they gotta be great?
Woo
Kicks off right away with the intro and to the point. Men always act like they are the most amazing creatures on earth until they’re given a chance and the woman has to find out they were just pretending. Dudes are great until they are actually in a scenario that requires that greatness where they come up short.
Verse 1
I just took a DNA test, turns out I’m 100% that bitch
Even when I’m crying crazy
Yeah, I got boy problems, that’s the human in me
Bling bling, then I solve ’em, that’s the goddess in me
You coulda had a bad bitch, non-committal
Help you with your career just a little
You’re ‘posed to hold me down, but you’re holding me back
And that’s the sound of me not calling you back
Taking a DNA test is a creative way to bring about the line I’m 100% that bitch, which means that she’s the girl that’s going to say exactly what she says in this song without holding anything back.
Admitting that she’s human and upset over boys because she really wants to believe them but ends up tricking herself, human error. She’s able to recover and move on quickly is how she solves her problems and then she proceeds into what he could have had.
“You could have had a bad bitch” is one of my favorite parts of this song. She continues into how she could have supported him and that when he needed to be there for her he was nowhere to be found and not needing him by not calling him back.
Chorus
Why men great ’til they gotta be great?
Don’t text me, tell it straight to my face
Best friend sat me down in the salon chair
Shampoo press, get you out of my hair
Fresh photos with the bomb lighting
New man on the Minnesota Vikings
Truth hurts, needed something more exciting
Bom bom bi dom bi dum bum bay
The chorus repeats the main point, you’re great until I need you to be great. Followed by lack of communication this guy has problems talking in person and instead takes the pansy way out and text messages her instead.
Into cleaning up a bit, possibly, getting all dolled up or having a salon day and then to take photos to post over social media to show off how amazing she can look. With the hint that she’s doing it for her new man with the intent of making sure her ex knows about and sees her to rub it in his face.
Verse 2
You tried to break my heart?
Oh, that breaks my heart
That you thought you ever had it
No, you ain’t from the start
Hey, I’m glad you’re back with your bitch
I mean who would wanna hide this?
I will never, ever, ever, ever, ever be your side chick
I put the sing in single
Ain’t worried ’bout a ring on my finger
So you can tell your friend, “shoot your shot” when you see ’em
It’s OK, he already in my DMs
This part goes on to say that no matter what the guy did to her, he can’t hurt her because she was never in love with him.
Followed up with the guy she was seeing apparently had a girlfriend or another chick he was trying to split time with and she found out so now she’s done and done, going her own way or as the internet famously calls it, “You do you, I’ll do me.”
All while indicating that one of his friends was interested in her and she’s going to take him up on that offer.
Chorus
Why men great ’til they gotta be great?
Don’t text me, tell it straight to my face
Best friend sat me down in the salon chair
Shampoo press, get you out of my hair
Fresh photos with the bomb lighting
New man on the Minnesota Vikings
Truth hurts, needed something more exciting
Bom bom bi bom bi dum bum bay
Same as above.
Bridge
I’ma hit you back in a minute
I don’t play tag, bitch, I been it
We don’t fuck with lies, we don’t do goodbyes
We just keep it pushing like aye yi yi
I’ma hit you back in a minute
I don’t play tag, bitch, I been it
We don’t fuck with lies, we don’t do goodbyes
We just keep it pushing like aye yi yi
Simply stating no more back and forths, I was the one and only or nothing at all. Not dealing with lies, no time for goodbyes, just keep pushing, means just keep moving with or without you.
Chorus
Why men great ’til they gotta be great?
Don’t text me, tell it straight to my face
Best friend sat me down in the salon chair
Shampoo press, get you out of my hair
Fresh photos with the bomb lighting
New man on the Minnesota Vikings
Truth hurts, needed something more exciting
Bom bom bi bom bi dum bum bay
Same as above.
As said above this song is very catchy which is why it got put so high on the billboards and remained there for quite some time. It’s really an emancipation from a bad relationship ballad in the form of a rap with a lot of attitude.
It’s just something that is becoming more common to relate to with all the easy options people have through social media for hookups and relationships it’s becoming harder and harder to find someone that will commit and not screw you over.
